Sororities

Alpha Kappa Alpha

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is the first national Black sorority. Mu Eta Chapter here on The University of West Alabama campus was chartered in May 1978. Many members have achieved excellence simply by living up to our motto, "Service to all Mankind."

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., believes in cultivating and encouraging high scholastic and ethical standards. That's our primary goal. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the only sorority that has operated in such programs as Cleveland Job Corps Center, one of our most important programs. In addition, we donate to such organizations as the NAACP and UNCF.

The most unique aspect of AKA Sorority is that we give and never expect to receive. We only hope that what we set out to achieve, we'll respectfully encourage those who believe.

Alpha Sigma Alpha

Alpha Sigma Alpha is a women's organization that was founded in 1901 on the campus of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, when five collegiate women made their friendships life-long, with deeper meaning. Zeta Rho Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, was chartered on our campus May 9, 1996. ASA is a women's organization that exists to promote high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among the four aims of intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development. Nationally, Alpha Sigma Alpha has 153 collegiate and alumnae chapters; more than 70,000 members are committed to promoting sisterhood, heritage and leadership.

Alpha Sigma Alpha also provides an opportunity for leadership and for networking and enables women to improve self-confidence and develop interpersonal skills, as well as providing structure and guidance through sisterhood, which is a strong bond of unconditional friendship based on common values and experiences.

The purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to foster close friendships between members and develop women of poise and purpose. Alpha Sigma Alpha was built on the spirit and motto of "aspire, seek, attain". Our vision is to cultivate values and ideals in women who are known for their character and concern for others. Alpha Sigma Alpha inspires women to lead, to serve and most of all to make a difference. Alpha Sigma Alpha promotes high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among our four aims of intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development. Alpha Sigma Alpha provides opportunities through: Sisterhood-forming strong bonds of unconditional friendship based on common values and experiences; Heritage- expressed through creed, ritual and history; and Leadership and Service- enhanced by chapter, campus and community involvement. The Zeta Rho chapter here at UWA is a very active part of the Greek community. Alpha Sigma Alpha participates in numerous campus events as well as community projects. They are a big supporter of their national philanthropies: Special Olympics (every fall semester, they sponsor the Mr. Fantasy Girl pageant in an effort to raise money, with 100 % of the proceeds going to Special Olympics) and the S. June Smith Center; the women of Alpha Sigma Alpha also participate in the annual Relay for Life for Sumter County.

The women of Alpha Sigma Alpha are dedicated to, and always follow our motto, "Aspire, Seek, Attain," in each endeavor. The blending of individuality into sisterhood makes Alpha Sigma Alpha a strong force and vital part of the University, local, and national communities.

Alpha Sigma Tau

Alpha Sigma Tau was founded on November 4, 1899, at Michigan State Normal College. The eight founding Sisters established a social organization whose purpose is to contribute to the educational, social, and cultural development of its members, and offer opportunities for leadership and academic success. Since our formation at The University of West Alabama in April of 1986, the Gamma Gamma chapter has strived for diversity among our members, and encourages close relationships between women of different backgrounds, talents, and convictions. We also promote and preserve high scholastic standards.

Gamma Gamma has taken a very active role on campus and in the community. The Alpha Taus support and participate in worthwhile community activities such as our annual Rock-a-Thon for charity, food and clothing drives for needy children and families, lending hands to area nursing homes, and working to clean up our campus, and community.

The Sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau also hold many vital leadership positions on campus including Residential Life staff, SGA officers and Representatives, Tutors for Student Support Service, Ambassadors, Campus Activities Board (CAB) members, varsity sports, Homecoming Court, Orientation Leaders, and Honor Society members and officers. We participate in everything from UWA Theater to intramural sports. We have one of the highest GPAs on campus, and are currently the eighth ranked chapter out of 104 nationally for our academic excellence.

Perhaps this best summarizes what a Tau is all about: She is a mixture of an energetic little girl, a troubled adolescent, a sophisticated coed, a charming young woman, and a wise old lady. She is there when you need help, and is always right beside you. She is an angel, a princess, your sister...a Tau.

Most importantly, however, the Alpha Taus are a family and a home away from home. We are very proud of the contributions our sorority has made not only to the University of West Alabama, but also to our community, state, and nation as well.

Delta Sigma Theta

Delta Sigma Theta was founded in January, 1913, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founding members established a social organization that encourages its members in cultural and educational endeavors. The Xi Delta chapter was established in 1978 at The University of West Alabama. Delta Sigma Theta strives to form a closer union among college women for the fostering of high ideals in moral, social and intellectual life.

The principle purposes and aims of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are to engage in cultural, educational, and public service activities. Members of the sorority are dedicated to a program of sharing membership skills and organizational services in the public interest. Some of our major public service projects include "Adopt-a-Mile," "Big Sister/Little Sister Program," and "The Black History Program." The sorority also has numerous fund-raisers for charity.

Members are also very active on campus in such organizations and programs as Student Support Services, Upward Bound Tutorial Programs, and the Angelic Voices of Faith choir. Some are also members of numerous honor societies including Alpha Chi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Cardinal Key, and Blue Key.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority feels that these accomplishments and community services have given each individual of the sorority a chance to mature with a sense of accomplishment and to live up to our motto, "Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom."

Phi Mu

Phi Mu Women's Fraternity was founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and is the second oldest sorority in the nation.  Phi Mu is a vibrant values-based women's organization.  Our purpose is found in the principles of love, honor and truth.

Phi Mu provides personal and academic development, service to others, commitment to excellence and lifelong friendship through a shared tradition.  Phi Mu promotes vibrant living, encouraging members to achieve their personal best.

Since 1969, Phi Mu's at UWA have become very active in the community and national projects. Activities vary from raising money for Children's Miracle Network (our national philanthropy) to walking in the Annual Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. In addition to these projects, the sisters enjoy visiting the nursing homes, having an Easter egg hunt for children at the campus daycare, and helping to keep our beautiful UWA campus clean. Phi Mu also participates in many on campus activities such as Miss UWA, Miss Paragon, Homecoming Queen and Court, Student Government Association, Honors Fraternities, Ambassadors, Orientation Leaders, Dance Team, Majorettes, Campus Activities Board, Cross Country, Diamond Darlings, campus tutors, cheerleaders, and Intramurals. Not only are we involved, but we carry on many leadership roles in these organizations as well.

But what can one expect when one becomes a Phi Mu Sister? Some of the most important rewards are opportunities for personal growth, sisterhood, friends for life, a home away from home, a shoulder to cry on, a person to laugh with, and most importantly a bond that can never be broken.  We are individuals, leaders, and friends.  We give and serve.  We are Phi Mu.

Zeta Phi Beta

Zeta Phi Beta, Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by Five Extraordinary Women known as the Five Pearls. Our Five Pearls departed from the traditional roles for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and finer womanhood. It was the ideal of the founders that the sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization.

The Sigma Theta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta was established in 1977 at the University of West Alabama. The chapter was reinstated in 1991 under the current chapter- Tau Xi. The members are actively involved on the UWA campus in SGA, Housing, Choir, Band, Honor Societies, Student Support Services, and other facets of student life.

The colors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are royal blue and pure white. Our symbols are the white dove and white cat and our motto is "A Community-Conscious, Action-Oriented Organization". Zeta Phi Beta encourages interested ladies to maintain their G.P.A, participate in campus activities, and take part in community service projects.
