Athletic Training Comprehensive Major

On May 20, 2015, the Athletic Training Strategic Alliance announced that the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Standards for Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs will be changed to require that professional programs be at the master's degree level. CAATE further stated that baccalaureate programs may not admit, enroll, or matriculate students into the athletic training program after the start of the fall term 2022. Therefore, students previously admitted to the UWA Bachelor of Athletic Training (BS or BA) prior to the fall semester of 2022 are able to continue progress toward the degree until completion under the previous catalogues.

The Athletic Training Comprehensive major listed here is a new major effective after the beginning of fall semester of 2022 and DOES NOT lead directly to eligibility for certification by the Board of Certification or state licensure. It is however, designed to provide an extensive background and experience in athletic training to better prepare students for eligibility, admission and success in graduate programs accredited by the CAATE (such as the UWA Master of Athletic Training) that do lead to eligibility for certification by the Board of Certification and subsequent licensure as an athletic trainer.

• Recommendations on majors and prerequisites for UWA's MAT Program can be found at https://www.uwa.edu/atmasters.

• This athletic training major or the health sciences major with an athletic training track is recommended for those students enrolling at UWA who desire to pursue the Master of Athletic Training. Further information can be found in the UWA General Catalogue.

• Frequently asked questions regarding the professional degree in athletic training are addressed by CAATE at https://caate.net/Portals/0/Documents/Strategic-Alliance-CCATE-email-pdf.pdf.
