History Major: Teacher Certification

Major Requirements: 36 hours

History majors pursuing teacher certification in History should follow the pattern below. Students should refer to the College of Education  section of the Catalogue for a listing of additional requirements for teacher certification.

One of the following two sequences is used to meet the College of Liberal Arts Basic Curriculum requirement. History Majors must take both sequences, but only one counts towards the major requirement.

• HY 101. History of Western Civilization I (3)
• HY 102. History of Western Civilization II (3)

• OR

• HY 103. Honors Western Civilization (3)
• HY 104. Honors Western Civilization II (3)

• AND

• HY 211. American History I (3)
• HY 212. American History II (3)

• Nine hours from the following:

• HY 300. Historical Methodologies and Practices (3)
• HY 400. Seminar in Historical Studies (3)
• HY 420. History of Alabama (3)

• Three hours from the following:

• HY 451. History of Japan (3)

• OR

• HY 452. History of China (3)

• Note(s):

  * Basic Curriculum requirements call for either the US or Western Civilization sequence; for the History major, the student must take both sequences.
